Its just a basic GUI, and its not finished. It does no more than the command line one does. It just simply gives it a pretty GUI. It has no progress bars or anything like that yet and I have done the configuration tab.

And the update tab requires it to be run as root. (But then so does the terminal command)

I’m sorry for my late response. I’m happy to see this kind of initiatives. Thanks a lot. I’ve downloaded the GUI and tested it on Ubuntu and FreeBSD and it works as expected.

Let me clarify the reason why we here in AVG stopped the support for GUI aimed for AVG 7.5 and based on exactly same technologies you are using. Our approach was the same – with python script parse the output of command line scan and draw it with python wrapper of GTK+. It works, it is fast to implement and easily portable to other platforms. However it has severe drawbacks. It is depended on command line functionality, it is depended on the output format of the command lines, it implies dependency on python and other python libraries, the threading model of python is not the greatest feature of it, etc. That’s why we stopped further development of this kind of GUI. Instead we will build an API and call respective functions directly.

Back to your project. I would propose to you to look at the “old” GUI we’ve written in python for AVG 7.5 and if you are interested in further development of this we can start talking about its support, about its development model, etc.
